Type 1 · 1A–1C
Straight
Sleek, smooth, and gravity-fed.
Type 1 hair grows straight from root to tip with no natural curl pattern. Sebum from the scalp travels down the shaft easily, which keeps Type 1 looking shiny. But it also means oil builds up faster than on any other type. The sub-types are separated mainly by thickness and how much body the strand naturally holds.

Breaking it down
The 1A–1C spectrum
1A. Fine & Silky
The finest of all hair types. Strands are thin and soft with zero curl. Limp volume is the main challenge. Lightweight products only, or the hair lies completely flat.
1B. Medium with Body
The most common straight type. Medium strand thickness with a touch of natural body and slight bend at the ends. Easier to hold styles and more versatile than 1A.
1C. Thick & Coarse
Thick, somewhat resistant strands that tend to frizz slightly and resist heat styling. The closest straight hair gets to having a texture. Can mimic a very loose wave.
What makes it tick
Characteristics
Natural shine
Flat cuticles reflect light easily, so Type 1 often looks shiny without much product.
Oil travels fast
Scalp oil can reach the lengths quickly, which can make roots look oily sooner.
Lower natural hold
Curls and volume usually need technique or heat to stay in place.
Buildup shows up
Heavy layers can make hair fall flat, so light products and regular resets help.
What it loves
Key needs
Scalp care
Lightweight, clarifying shampoos and scalp scrubs. Type 1 scalps need regular resets.
Volume
Volumizing sprays, mousses, and root-lifting techniques add body without coating strands.
Heat protection
Flat irons and blow dryers are staples. Always apply a heat protectant beforehand.
Avoid heaviness
Skip heavy butters, thick creams, or oils at the root. They'll flatten and grease immediately.
Step by step
Starter wash day routine
Clarify
Use a sulfate-based or clarifying shampoo once a week to fully remove buildup and reset the scalp.
Condition
Apply conditioner to mid-lengths and ends only. Never roots. Rinse thoroughly.
Towel dry gently
Blot, don't rub. Fine strands are most fragile when wet.
Apply lightweight serum
A rice water spray or lightweight serum through the lengths for shine and frizz control.
Blow dry with volume
Use a round brush and blow downward to smooth the cuticle and add body at the root.

Pro tips
From the field
Reset buildup
Clarify monthly with a chelating shampoo when hard water, dry shampoo, or styling products leave residue behind.
Use dry shampoo early
Apply it the night before a wash day so it can absorb oil overnight and brush out more cleanly.
Finish cool
For 1C especially, a cool rinse can help the surface feel smoother and look glossier.
